Exercise Science and Sports Medicine

The health and wellness field is growing rapidly. Join the Exercise Science and Sports Medicine program to explore career paths in personal training and group fitness as well as the option to continue after high school in physical or occupational therapies and athletic training.

Program Highlights:

  • Exercise Science and Sports Medicine offers a wide variety of skills and knowledge for each student participating in the program to graduate and move into a high-demand career in the health and fitness industry.

  • Intro to Nutrition

  • Athletic training skills and technique

  • Legal aspects of the sport and fitness industry

  • Facilities management

  • Injury prevention

  • Fitness program design, demonstration, and implementation

  • Use a wide range of fitness equipment

  • Use tools to measure:

    • Respiratory response

    • Metabolic rate

    • Body composition

    • Energy Expenditure Testing

    • Cardiovascular output

    • Strength

    • Endurance capacity

    • VO₂ Max

    • Resting vitals

    • Range of Motion Measurement

Areas of Study:

  • Current trends in fitness

  • Injury prevention in sports and fitness

  • CPR and AED training and certification

  • Nutrition

  • Physiology of sport and fitness

  • Opportunity to earn industry-recognized personal training, group fitness, Strength and Conditioning Coach, and Physical Therapy Aide certifications

  • Learn to design and implement strength and conditioning programs for athletes

Credits Available:

  • Exercise Science I:

    • 3 elective credits

    • 1 science credit (anatomy)

  • Exercise Science II:

    • 3 elective credits

  • Dual credit available through Columbus State Community College and Marion Technical College

  • College credits available through an articulation agreement with Columbus State Community College, and through Career-Technical Assurance Guides (CTAGs)

CTAGs are transferrable to Ohio public colleges. Credits vary per program.

Industry Credentials Available:

  • American Council of Exercise (ACE) Personal Training Certification***

  • American Council of Exercise (ACE) Group Fitness Instructor Certification***

  • CPR and AED***

  • American Medical Certification Association (AMCA) Physical Therapy Aide Certification***

  • ISSA (International Sports Science Association)- Strength and Conditioning Coach (optional)

***Industry credential recognized by ODE for points toward graduation.

This program is participating in the Chromebook One to One Experience. An additional one-time fee to purchase a Chromebook will be waived if you are a returning student who has already participated in the Chromebook One to One Experience or if you are bringing your own technology.
